The aim was to let people focus on the decisions being made and not the calcuation when doing algrebra, exposing the decision making and underlying logic of "why" you do stuff in algrebra.
It was important that this was a toy, not a tutorial. Rather than having a fail state an equation can be played with rather than solved.
Eventually it would be nice to flip the dynamic of learning with it. Let students knot up an equation and give it to their friend to solve, reinforcing the play over solving mentality.
